Chapter 11

Reagan trailed after Alessa. It was the only decision to be made as he refused to leave her alone at a time like this, even if it meant going around in circles and abandoning their plan of a smooth, no-hassle escape. To the older phoenix’s credit, it seemed to know the best way, knocking over obstacles before they even got there—like surges of ice traps and a Winter Fae or two—and clearing a path that took them away from the court.

To Alessa’s credit, she put a significant distance between her and her mother, as if understanding the dangers of getting too close. But she wasn’t stopping, either, the fire in her eyes back, her silence worrying him enough to set his problems aside.

A glance behind had him sighing. “Seriously. You’re free to go wherever you wish.”

Dustin shrugged. “I am going where I wish. That’s one smart phoenix.”

“Murderous one,” Ulric muttered, gawking at the next Fae they passed with their eyes gouged out.

“Like your people don’t murder?” Reagan shot back.

The Autumn Fae had no reply to that, but the two seemed to figure out this was the best way, too. They returned to silence as the journey went on, hiding for cover when necessary and going faster when they suspected they were being followed. An hour later, he blinked, stopping in his tracks when the coldness he had gotten used to was gone. He reached out to Alessa, whose dazed eyes cleared as she looked at him.

“We got out,” he said softly. Then, “She’s gone.”

The edge of the forest led to vast fields ahead. It was empty. Desperation sparked as she shook her head.

“She’s just good at hiding. I have to keep looking.”

Reagan bit the protest back, understanding the importance of family. When she stalked forward, so did he…but so did the two Fae. He shot them a puzzled look, shooed them back, and sighed when they kept going. One forest after another, the two tailed after them, Dustin looking curiously around while Ulric’s face steadily got contemplative. Then they stiffened and halted abruptly, glancing at each other with wide eyes.

Alessa did, too, and Reagan almost crashed into her. Their shoulders rubbed, watchful of their environment, which was just another forest as far as he was concerned.

“This isn’t our territory,” she whispered, the fire clearing from her features. He latched on to what wasn’t being said.

But it feels like it is.

Seconds later, that theory was proven correct when a figure stepped forward, bringing with him the deliberate scent of flowers. Lavender hair was styled to perfection while pale silver eyes landed on her. His robes were plain and black, the coat allowing him to blend in with the human world—which was where Reagan suspected Armand had been traipsing about.

“Alessa, finally. I have been looking for you everywhere. I didn’t expect to see you with him after everything that happened.”

There was relief and warmth at first. Then the last part was accompanied by Armand’s attention zoning in on him. The warmth disappeared.
